The Voter Education Gap

Hillary ClintonThe Washington Post conducted some research among white voters. What the results basically say is that Hillary Clinton enjoys a higher popularity among the non-college-educated segment of the U.S. electorate.

As an example, in Virginia, where 52 percent of white voters opted for Barack Obama, the Illinois senator did 18 percentage points better than Hillary Clinton among those with college degrees, but lost by 15 points among those with less formal education.

Those numbers do not surprise us at all. After all, what percentage of well-educated people supported the senseless war in Iraq?

Going back to Virginia once again, about half of whites regardless of the education level said that the nation is “definitely” ready for a woman president, just a third of whites without college degrees were that sure the country is prepared for a black president and they were almost twice as likely as college educated whites to say the nation is not ready for an African American chief executive.

Our take in a nutshell: Racism and stupidity are alive and well in America.

Excluding Candidates From Debates

It is pretty obvious by now, who are the front-runners in both parties’ presidential races, but why aren’t all of the still running candidates allowed to participate in debates?

Although Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, Ralph Nader and to a lesser degree Mike Huckabee probably don’t stand a chance in hell of getting nominated, their input could still be a valuable part of our political discourse.

Ron PaulQuite frankly, Ron Paul has probably won some of the debates over the mainstream Republican candidates, simply by saying things that needed to be said and wouldn’t by other Republicans, who have their heads stuck so deeply into Bush’s behind that they cannot think clearly any longer.

Dennis Kucinich, in turn, the man who did not vote for the infamous Patriot Act, because “he read it” and who tried to gain support for the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney is being kept out of the Democratic debates, which of course nowadays feature only Clinton and Obama.

Although, we think that Ralph Nader should not be running for president again, Mr. Nader’s voice needs to be heard as well, if we are to have a true democratic discourse in this country.

Nader for President, Again?

Ralph NaderRalph Nader, the well-known consumer advocate has once again – for the third time, we believe – announced his intention to run for president of the U.S.

Although, we agree to a large degree with Mr. Nader’s work over the years and do respect many of his opinions, why is he doing this?

Last time he run, in 2000, Nader got around three percent of the popular vote, possibly ruining Al Gore’s chances of getting elected.

Mr. Nader, I think that your time and efforts would be better spent endorsing the candidate of your choice, be it Barack Obama, or Hillary Clinton – as we know full well that you will not even consider McCain – and help them get elected. You could be a valued adviser, and maybe a member of the cabinet, but running for president again is just silly we think.

Please reconsider.

McCain and Lobbyists

This is a quote directly taken from John McCain 2008 website: “In the Senate, John continued to demand that Congress put an end to loopholes for special interests and fix the broken system in Washington that too often allows lobbyists to write legislation and members of Congress to waste taxpayer money.”

At the same time,  The Washington Post reports: “But when McCain huddled with his closest advisers at his rustic Arizona cabin last weekend to map out his presidential campaign, virtually every one was part of the Washington lobbying culture he has long decried. His campaign manager, Rick Davis, co-founded a lobbying firm whose clients have included Verizon and SBC Telecommunications. His chief political adviser, Charles R. Black Jr., is chairman of one of Washington’s lobbying powerhouses, BKSH and Associates, which has represented AT&T, Alcoa, JPMorgan and U.S. Airways. Senior advisers Steve Schmidt and Mark McKinnon work for firms that have lobbied for Land O’ Lakes, UST Public Affairs, Dell and Fannie Mae.”

McCain and LobbyistsThe Post report is credible, as it is not secret, who are the people running John McCain’s campaign.

It doesn’t really matter, if McCain actually popped the reasonably attractive and considerably younger Vicki Iseman eight years ago. If he did, more power to him, I guess. The question is rather, what did she achieve on behalf of her clients by this “friendly” relationship with the Arizona senator?

The alleged relationship – which McCain continues to vehemently deny and The New York Times keeps insisting is true – happened while Senator McCain was the Republican Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee.

According to The New York Times, McCain wrote letters to the Federal Communications Commission in behalf of Paxson Communications (now Ion Media Networks) and Glencairn Ltd. calling for regulatory changes that would benefit two of Ms. Iseman’s most important corporate clients. McCain’s meddling even drew a rare rebuke from the FCC Chairman for its impropriety.

Enough said, it seems. Do the Republicans have a viable candidate in 2008, then?

Xerox This!

barack obama hillary clinton Xerox This!During Thursday’s Democratic debate in Austin, Texas, Hillary Clinton once again accused Barack Obama of political plagiarism, saying: “”You know, lifting whole passages from someone else’s speeches is not change you can believe in, it’s change you can Xerox.” The audience jeered loudly.

Obama responded: “The notion that I had plagiarized from somebody who’s one of my national co-chairs, who gave me the line and suggested that I use it, I think is silly. This is where we start getting into silly season in politics, ” which drew applause from the audience.

Speaking of plagiarism, Hillary Clinton has said during the same debate that: “Whatever happens, we’re going to be fine. I just hope that we’ll be able to say the same thing about the American people, and that’s what this election should be about.” Funny thing is, this was an almost verbatim repeat of a statement that former Senator John Edwards has used not that long ago. As far as we know, Edwards has not authorized Clinton to use those words, the way that Patrick allowed and even encouraged Obama to use his.

Who then is the plagiarist?
