Some Thoughts About Social Media

There is no doubt that social media has become widely popular. There are also varied discussions about its worth in journalism.
We think that this excellent cartoon by John Cole of The Times-Tribune can give us quite a bit to think about on this subject…

Okay, maybe it is my age, but I see little value in Facebook or Twittering. I guess it’s okay for kids but only if properly monitored by their parents. I have done the Twitter thing and it makes my head spin. I just don’t care what people are eating at any given moment or what their kid threw up today.
Blogging is different. It is a venue of relevance that will soon be THE media. I have read that there are 22,000 new blogs per day. Some of them are good and some are rubbish. It’s kindred to going into a book store and finding what is pleasing, informative or socially redemptive. Oh, and texting…I would rather hear your voice, thanks. If you can’t call me to chat, why should I make my fingers dance to respond to your message? Geez, my head hurts.
Its not necessarily about usefulness, or actual benefits, but much too often about simple, low-down trendiness, I think.

facebook – nawwww,, not for me.
I must have been in the right spot
in the twitterverse, because I’m having
great success with it. I’ve gained
readers, had more push for posts; and infact
I was even picked up for syndication by two
majors several times lately from my tweets.
btw, our neocons on parade is back on tomorrow;
and it was retweeted by huffington. lets see if
we can get them to retweet it and relink again
tonite when I hit it again, with the newest piece.
