Will Setting Afghan Withdrawal Date Lead to Talibs Going on Vacations?
President Obama has stated that after inserting an additional 30, 000 U.S. troops, along with several thousand NATO soldiers into Afghanistan, the U.S. contingent will be withdrawn within 18 months.
“After 18 months, our troops will begin to come home. These are the resources that we need to seize the initiative, while building the Afghan capacity that can allow for a responsible transition of our forces out of Afghanistan,” said President Barack Obama, speaking at the United States Military Academy at West Point on Tuesday evening.
We can only hope that the Taliban will not simply lay down their arms and wait, until we leave, or take Caribbean vacations in preparation for the U.S. troop departure and then come back all rested and refreshed to wreak more havoc.

I believe the Taliban will wait. It’s what they do best.
I suppose if I was them, I would too…
They will have a Tupperware party and once we leave the killing will begin! Brilliant!
There of course is the other alternative: They could really get nasty as to make keeping the exit strategy timetable not practical, or impossible. Either way, we get the shaft, but as usual, the biggest losers will be the Afghans themselves.
Why couldn’t the Republicans in power at the time of the Soviet withdrawal follow up, help, fund and rebuild?
There would have never been an Afghan Taliban, a mythical al-Qaida leader supposedly hiding in a cave and so forth.
It is exhausting to even “follow along” with all the chorus of questioners. The administration — and the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense — have repeatedly clarified the 2011 date as when certain, peaceful provinces of Afghanistan will be released from occupation rule back into the control of the rehabilitated Kabul government.
“It’s impossible! He’s lying — trying to trick us into another Viet Nam! It’s Bush-Light!”
Making war and making incoherent talking points over and over are not the same. Barack Obama is not the same as the W (he was elected and he is not a loser…) and is not the same as LBJ (he is not a Texan and he is not afraid of the American people …). Based on everything we’ve seen this administration do so far, I have to assume that his Afghanistan strategy will be quite successful.
I suspect we will have a “win” on our hands here, at least as much of a “win” as possible given the treasonous screw ups in that unfortunate country so far. Of course, this is very upsetting to the “hate America” cynics in the Palin-Beck Party. I’m so relieved that Mr. Harrison hasn’t soiled himself with any allegiance to that crowd.
Chad, there is nothing I would like to see more than some sort of a “win” in Afghanistan, not only so we can withdraw our troops, but to finally enable the long-suffering Afghan people to finally lead something resembling a normal life.
